The
History of the Project:-
One
of the priority areas of the Local Strategic Partnership (LSP)
has been the development of a more consistent and co-ordinated
approach to public involvement and in June 2000 a joint agency
working group, responsible to the Partnership was formed to
look at how this might be achieved. It was agreed that
all agencies need to consult and involve the public in the
planning and provision of local services and are faced with
ever-increasing legislation and organizational agendas which
require evidence of public involvement.
It
was also recognized that there needed to be a more strategic
and co-ordinated local approach to consultation and involvement,
thereby reducing the “bombardment” of local people and organizations
who were feeling overwhelmed and “turned off” by requests for
views and opinions.
In
May 2001 the East Devon Public Involvement project was established
to address these needs. It is funded by the LSP and line
managed by East Devon Volunteer Support Agency.

The
Public Involvement Team would like to thank all those who returned
their Speak Now membership update forms, and especially those
who recommended a friend to the scheme.
Their
names were entered into a free prize draw, and the lucky
winner of the garden centre vouchers was Mrs Metcalf.
We
are still looking for new members to join Speak Now, the
citizens’ panel for East Devon, so if you know of anyone
who would like to contribute their views in a meaningful
way to improve services in the area, please do put them in
touch with us. |
What
has happened so far:-
In
its first year the project consulted local people on the East
Devon Community Plan, assisted with gathering views for the
current Community Safety Audit, helped plan a public involvement
conference and workshop for the East Devon Primary Care Trust
and established the East Devon citizen’s panel, Speak Now,
which now has 360 members.
Consultation
events range from workshops/discussion days for 80 people to
smaller focus groups and surveys. An example of the work undertaken
by the project in 2003/4 includes ongoing user involvement in
older people’s health and social care, gathering of views on
a range of Council services such as Refuse and Recycling, Economic
Development and Council Tax and finding out what people think
about domiciliary care services in East Devon.
