The Homework Club is funded by Children in Need, hosted by EDVSA and supported by East Devon District Council and the Community Safety Partnership. Based in the deprived ward of St Paul’s in Honiton, the club provides sessions on Monday and Tuesday after school. This is a regular, scheduled opportunity for children and young people to meet in a non-judgemental environment in which they can interact with each other, supported by a Project co-ordinator and 2 part-time support workers.
The regularity of the sessions provides a focal point for children and young people and an opportunity for breaking down barriers and meeting new people, particularly valuable in an area of transient housing. By its very nature, the club has to be flexible in the way it is run and the staff and volunteers alike take this in their stride to deliver a wide variety and high standard of activities which are of huge benefit to the attendees.
We pride ourselves on:
Treating everyone equally, regardless of ability, and encouraging the children / young people to do the same
- Encouraging responsibility in all areas
- Encouraging respect for others, particularly in listening to each other if we have a 'show and tell' at the end
- Not allowing bad language at the club. This was something that the older children / young people wrote into the rules themselves
Finding and focussing on the children’s / young people’s strengths
Differentiating when planning activities and tasks
1-2-1 time with an adult for the children / young people
